The CMA is undertaking a legacy project in our 75th anniversary year (2025) to undergo a total gallery lighting renovation and fresh reinstall of all the art throughout the galleries.

The current gallery lighting system is obsolete and must be updated to best preserve and present the art on view. To accommodate this work, gallery closures will begin in mid-January 2025. Galleries are expected to reopen in phases beginning May 2025.

We'll share the details here as we're able — as we all know, renovation projects can have some surprises! Here's what we know now: The exhibition galleries on the first floor will close after French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850 – 1950 ends on January 5, 2025. The CMA Collection galleries on the second floor will close in phases beginning January 20; by March 2, all second-floor galleries will have closed.

The CMA will continue to offer programs and events throughout this time, and the USC / Columbia 63 Our Story Matters Gallery will remain open. And of course, we will keep busy on Boyd Plaza!

Coinciding with the CMA Collection reinstallation, the CMA will also launch a new tour program for audiences including K-12, college and graduate students, and adults. We look forward to celebrating the culmination of this lighting project and the CMA’s 75th anniversary in early 2026, and we can’t wait for visitors to experience their museum in a brand-new light!
