Over the course of art history, frames have been understood to serve a primarily utilitarian role, yet their rich evolution is as steeped in artistry, aesthetics, and stylistic variety as any other object. A good frame does far more than simply protect the work of art it houses; it can greatly enhance or detract from the overall viewing experience and impact of an object. In fact, oftentimes, the construction of a frame was more time-consuming and used more precious materials than the painting it holds.
Join CMA Preparator Laura Garner Hine for a frame-focused stroll through the Collection galleries, where she gives a brief history on frames, an overview on common materials and methods used to create them, and an intimate look and in-depth discussion on the delicate processes involved in bringing a frame back to its original splendor.
Informed by our roles as museum workers and artists, What We See is a staff-led series of talks that look at art through personal perspectives. Join us as we share our stories and prepare to say "farewell for now" to the CMA Collection galleries.
