A Rainy Day by Hans Burkhardt is my favorite work in the collection galleries. It is noted in the description that the title comes from the somber tones of the city rooftops depicted in this piece, but I am drawn in by the warmth of the color and the Cubist elements seen in the peaks and hard lines of the cityscape. As I stand with this work, I am transported to memories of rainy nights in my hometown of Atlanta, making my way up Peachtree Street, with hues of warm light from signs and towers standing in contrast to the night sky. To me, seeing lights on those dark nights always reminded me that I was never alone, and so in this painting I find comfort.
