Baker & Baker presents the Music of Reena Esmail
Sunday, January 10 | 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. | Facebook Live
In celebration of the exhibition Visions from India on closing day, the SC Philharmonic and the CMA welcome Los Angeles-based, Indian American composer Reena Esmail for a virtual program. Esmail works between the worlds of Indian and Western classical music and brings communities together through the creation of equitable musical spaces. The program includes pieces for soloists as well as small ensembles. Esmail joins SC Philharmonic Music Director Morihiko Nakahara virtually to introduce and discuss each piece.
Widely regarded as a leading composer of her generation, Esmail is the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s 2020–2023 Swan Family Artist-in-Residence and Seattle Symphony’s 2020–21 Composer-in-Residence. Previously, she was named a 2019 United States Artist Fellow in Music and the 2019 Grand Prizewinner of the S & R Foundation’s Washington Award. Esmail was also a 2017–18 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow.
The Baker & Baker series is devoted to highlighting diverse musical performances, ranging from Baroque music with harpsichords to avant-garde music played with nontraditional materials, and showcases musical excellence in its many forms.
Sponsored by the Baker & Baker Foundation.
