CinéCola Film Festival: Ernest et Célestine2:00 p.m.CinéCola Film Festival: Ernest et Célestine
CinéCola is a community-wide French and Francophone Film Festival, which originated from a collaborative desire to bring recent French and Francophone films to South Carolina in an effort to promote the French language and the cultural diversity of the Francophone world. The festival committee is composed of dedicated faculty from the French Program at the University of South Carolina and the Modern Languages Division at Columbia College.

Ernest et Célestine: This utterly charming animated film about interspecies friendship, directed by Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Pater, and Benjamin Renner, is based on a series of children’s books by the Belgian author-illustrator Gabrielle Vincent (1929–2000). In an unnamed French city, two different realms of sworn enemies exist: above ground live the bears; below it reside the mice. Celestine, a wee mouse orphan who is being trained for a career in dentistry, but dreams of being an artist instead, meets a kindred spirit in adult Ernest, an ursine musician whom she convinces not to eat her. They seal their bond by breaking into a candy store together and soon find themselves on the lam from those who are appalled by their amity. These unlikely friends set up their own home in the woods, delighting in both their similarities and differences. The detailed, warm, hand-drawn animation emphasizes the tender companionship between a mouse who loves to sketch and a bear who is happiest when playing a violin. 2012. 80 minutes.

Robert S. Duncanson: 19th-Century African-American Master6:00 p.m.Robert S. Duncanson: 19th-Century African-American Master
Join CMA Chief Curator Will South for a special talk. This lecture, sponsored by the Friends of African American Art & Culture, is presented in celebration of the Museum’s recent acquisition of Duncanson’s beautiful oil on canvas, Landscape with Fantastic Architecture. After the talk, enjoy light refreshments and be among the first Museum patrons to see this wonderful painting, on view for the first time that evening.

Though famous in his lifetime and called the "greatest landscape painter in the West," after his death in 1872 Robert Duncanson faded into obscurity. In recent decades, however, his work has been the subject of several books and major exhibitions. America has rediscovered an artist of exceptional talent who painted some of the most important murals in America prior to the Civil War and whose work was purchased by the King of Sweden. We have found an artist who envisioned a life without limits, a life beyond the role of the slave or laborer into which African-Americans had been cast. Against all odds, he made himself into an artist and forged a place in history as one of the finest painters of the 19th century.

Lecture: Norman Rockwell: Painter (or Illustrator?) of AmericaNoonLecture: Norman Rockwell: Painter (or Illustrator?) of America
As famous and admired as he is, some in the art world still categorize Norman Rockwell as an "Illustrator" as if he were not also a fine artist. Indeed, Rockwell is often at the center of a long-running debate among art specialists as to whether or not such a distinction (between artist and illustrator) is, or ever was, valid. In his talk, CMA Chief Curator Will South examines how useful (or not) this argument has been to understanding Norman Rockwell, an artist so often cited as defining American values.
