The Bands

7:00 DJ Matt Porter
Having grown up in Detroit, DJ Matt Porter has an ear for all things soulful; putting together eclectic selections of everything from dusty Motown hits to African electro pop, vintage reggae and classic disco. Crafting his selections exclusively from old records, each set is chance to share some precious and often neglected tunes from his ever growing record boxes.
8:00 Elonzo

Elonzo is a family band that hails from South Carolina. They consist of singer/songwriter Jeremy Davis and his sister Maggie Bourdeaux, along with her husband Dan Bourdeaux and friends Stephen Narron and Dennis Contreras.

The band was named after Jeremy and Maggie’s father, Elonzo, who passed away from cancer back in 1992. These Southern natives have released A Letter to a Friend, their sophomore album. According to the band, the album was developed organically live before ever being recorded, and the idea for the album stems from the title: Davis penned songs to, for and about the people that have meant or will mean something to him. 9:00 Brave Baby

Culminating in the Carolinas in the summer of 2009, Brave Baby has emerged to establish a new standard for indie-rock music. As a result of the collaboration of singer/lyricist Keon Masters, guitarist Christian Chidester, and drummer/producer Ryan Zimmerman, Brave Baby’s untitled debut album takes listeners back to previously felt universal emotions through their use of powerful lyrics, catchy guitar, supportive percussion and harmonies. Citing Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, and The Band as a few of their influences, Brave Baby’s sound is nostalgic fun, while also being musically mature.

The band originated in Charlotte, NC, but has since made way down to Charleston, SC. Since 2009, they have been searching for their identity as a band, continuing to develop and change, transforming into the cohesive musicality that is found in their songs. Masters uses his life experiences in love, heartache, family, and religion to write lyrics for the musical accompaniment provided by Chidester and Zimmerman, the latter being an established producer in his own right. Brave Baby has also commissioned Adam Eddy (percussion, keyboard) to complete their line up and help further develop their sound.

10:00 Whiskey Gentry
Paste Magazine was dead-on when they called The Whiskey Gentry a “toe-tapping, steamrolling kind of band, its fingers picking deep into fields of bluegrass, feet stomping in line with a punk-inspired kick drum.” Formed in 2009 by husband and wife duo Lauren Staley and Jason Morrow, The Whiskey Gentry is a group of seasoned veterans—to put things mildly, some of the finest pickers and musicians the Southeast has to offer. A recent finalist in the Chris Austin Songwriting Competition held at MerleFest, Staley's natural gifts with words and her powerful lead vocal abilities complement the band’s edgy interpretation of an otherwise traditional sound. All of this, coupled with a commanding and high-energy live performance, sets the bar for the way today’s country music ought to sound—honest, tight, daring, and void of pretension.
