Jamine Santiago named winner of Columbia Design League’s 2013 Runaway Runway recycled fashion show

Columbia, SC – Jamine Santiago, a chef and owner of Classic Catering who lives in West Columbia, SC, was presented the Top Design award at Columbia Design League’s Runaway Runway 2013, a competitive fashion show featuring designs assembled from recycled materials, on Saturday, April 6 at the Township Auditorium. More than 1,000 people watched the show, co-hosted by Cyrus Frakes and Chelsea Washington. Almost 60 fashions created by designers ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens appeared on the runway. In one evening, designers proved that green fashion could be fun, fabulous, fashionable and funky.

Santiago says, “I have been so excited to be a part of Runaway Runway! For years I have admired the outfits at the Columbia Museum of Art and wanted to enter some designs of my own, and this year I did it! My outfit was inspired by Audrey Hepburn. She is so elegant and timeless; I wanted my design to reflect that. We had to tear down our kids’ trampoline and I looked at the netting and zipper and saw what good shape it was in and I hated to add it to the landfill, so I pulled it out and dragging it back to the garage, I suddenly envisioned a backless cocktail dress and train! I removed the buckles off an old shoe that the soles had worn out and used the front shoe tab to be the top of the dress with the zipper being used to form the back and the facings of the dress. I made the train as a detachable option and used another buckle to connect that so that the dress could be used to dance in. I just added a poof of trampoline netting and made a fascinator to top the dress off. I have never had so much fun in my life!”

A diverse panel of five judges determined the winners. Awards were presented for craftsmanship, green ability, wear ability, top model and the 2013 Runaway Runway winner.
